Whether your style is bohemian or upscale or vintage, Manhattan is a shopper’s paradise. All the luxury brands have a presence in New York City center, so it’s something no luxury traveler should miss. As you sketch out your trip, here are some things to keep in mind.

Have a plan — or a style in mind

ShoppingThey don’t call it the Big Apple for nothing; New York City is big indeed. While it’s easy to simply stumble around and find some great luxury shopping, you’ll make the most of your time by mapping out your shopping route ahead of time. That means having some idea of the stores and boutiques that cater to your style, first and foremost. And if you need someone to help with those ideas, The Luxury Expert is always here to help…

You might not have to go anywhere

New York City Mandarin OrientalThen again, luxury travelers can also stay right in their luxury hotel and get access to the latest styles. Many Manhattan hotels will set you up with a personal shopper who can bring items right to your room, while other hotels offer free shuttle service to select high-end stores. It’s yet another reason to access the insider information.

I recently stayed at the Mandarin Oriental which sits across from Central Park. The hotel is conveniently located above The Shops at Columbus Circle which you can directly access by a short elevator ride.

Regardless of the weather outside you can indulge yourself in retail therapy. The shops take up the first four levels of the enormous glass complex and include dozens of retail shops, such as Aveda, Bose, Borders, Coach and Whole Foods. There are also numerous bars and gourmet restaurants like Thomas Keller’s Per Se.

Dizzy's Jazz in ManhattenMy personal highlight while in New York City was a visit to Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola (voted #1 jazz club by NYC hotel concierge) is where the classic jazz club is reinvented. Up-and-coming artists, great soul food and a full bar will guarantee a noteworthy memory. Be sure to include this during your visit to New York City.

Want to save dough? Know when to go!

I recommend that you avoid September due to Fashion week and the annual United Nations General Assembly conference which last two weeks. October is a great month to visit and enjoy the fall leaves in the park. The months of January and July are when stores roll out their clearance sales, so it’s always a good time to go to get more for your money.

But that’s not the only time to save. Start following your favorite brands on their social channels now, because they’ll often announce their “sample sales” last-minute. With any luck, you’ll have your trip planned right before one happens. After all, travel is not a one-size-fits-all experience. This is perhaps the most important reason I can think of to use a highly trained travel consultant. For me, travel is not just a job, but a passion and a joy to be shared.
