Wellness Travel: The Latest Trend or the Ultimate Luxury?
Last month I had the pleasure of attending a conference in Toronto dedicated to wellness travel. This is definitely a trend as more and more vacation-seekers are looking to align themselves with travel experiences that also will renew their body, mind and soul.
It’s really no surprise given the stressful pace of modern life. What might surprise you is how many luxury resorts, spas and cruise lines now offer wellness programs along side their traditional world-class services.
This combination of comfort with well-being is in direct response to the increase in demand. But, not all resorts have what it takes. It is one thing to have a spa in a hotel but it is quite different when someone chooses to devote an entire week or more where wellness is the goal.
Some of the best resorts in the world are answering the call. With a focus on diet and exercise, to spirituality and life coaching (with a spotlight on personal attention), no element has been neglected. You’ll also find luxury amenities, and a myriad of activities that embrace fitness, sensible dining, and personal achievement. You could even think of it as a holistic approach to wellness with style.
Wellness Travel Defined
While there is no single definition, most getaways of this type could be described as vacations (or even business trips) where getting and/or staying well is integral to the trip. This usually means taking advantage of specific programs and facilities designed for that purpose. In other words, it is a travel experience intended to have you feeling better when you depart than when you arrived, regardless of whether the trip was for work or for play.
Anyone can add a little more health, fitness or relaxation into almost any journey. In fact, engaging in one or more wellness activities during a typical trip is now very common and anticipated by the better resorts and cruise lines. The trend however is toward vacations that are entirely focused on wellness as the primary objective.
Forget The Stereotypes
One of things I love the most about dedicated wellness resorts is their passion for great (and healthful) food. Often we equate nutritious fare with boring flavorless dishes. But today, you can enjoy exquisite, locally sourced, organic cuisine from renowned chefs who care as much about creating memorable dining experience as they care your health.
While some resorts in this category are totally nonalcoholic, there are others for those who prefer to pair the perfect wine with their meals, or enjoy an occasional cocktail.
I recently visited one of my favourite wellness resorts: The Body Holiday LeSport, located in St. Lucia. Their motto is “Give us your body for a week and we will give you back your mind.”
I was very impressed with the wide variety of activities available for every personalities or preference. For example, my wife enjoyed yoga and dance classes while I took in a golf lesson and went snorkeling. There is a wonderful balance of options where you can still eat a hamburger or take full advantage of a huge selection of healthy vegan and vegetarian meals. Also, this resort is all-inclusive, even offering one complimentary spa treatment per day. What bliss!
Close To Home Or Around The Globe
Wellness travel has grown so much that it is now available on every continent. You don’t have to travel far to experience it, and it can be a perfect weekend getaway. Of course, if you’re up for something longer or a little more exotic, there are countless choices for every taste.
My advice is this: give it a try! You might be surprised to find that a wellness travel vacation could be the perfect remedy for your body, mind and soul.
