You like the finer things in life, whether it involves your fine wine, your choice of car, or even the sort of getaways you plan. When it comes to winter getaways, there’s something to be said for the activities and the opulence that a big winter resort can provide. But then again, there’s also something to be said for finding the perfect spot, far off the beaten path. If you’re looking for the latter for your next winter getaway, we have some ideas.

Ski Towns Off the Beaten Path

Skiing in BCIn Canada, the larger mountain resorts often get the majority of the attention–and the patronage–of the non-local crowds looking for a good mix of comfort, amenities and amazing winter sports. That’s one way to go–but another is to seek out the lesser-known ski resorts. You’ll often get the type of luxury you seek, but with fewer crowds and more personalized service. Take the case of British Columbia’s Whistler-Blackcomb, for example. It’s a wonderful place to visit–but more off-the-beaten-path options in the Canadian Rockies include BC’s Revelstoke. There, the Sutton Place Hotel features luxury condos that allow you to ski in and ski out with ease. The same goes for mountain resorts in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, California, or even the Austrian Alps, for that matter. When you’re looking to skip the big resorts and go for a more intimate experience, let the Luxury Expert help you narrow down your choices for winter getaways!

Staying Warm

Blue Lagoon in IcelandAnd who says that outdoor winter sports have to be the only activities you take part in all winter? It might not exactly seem like the time to think about swimming (or soaking), but it should be. The cool days and nights of winter are the perfect time to seek out the serenity of a hot springs near you. And fortunately for the aesthetes among us, that doesn’t have to involve roughing it either! You’ll find luxury hot springs resorts peppered anywhere there are hot springs–and that’s a lot of places. Iceland is famous for their geothermal hot springs, especially the Blue Lagoon.  Also worth checking out is Bonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa in the Columbia River Gorge separating the states of Oregon and Washington. Not only is there breathtaking Gorge scenery to be enjoyed, but there are also rustic yet upscale bath house and a welcoming spa to delight in.

Holiday Shopping

vienna-hallWhen you’re ready for some sun and fun that doesn’t involve snow flakes, it can be a challenge to escape the crowds. I’ll always aim for a highly-personalized experience for every one of the trips I plan with you, but here’s one secret I don’t mind getting out.   The Christmas markets of Europe make delightful winter getaways.  Many of the River Cruise company’s offer special Holiday cruises in December. Check out Passau, Salzburg and Vienna and see some of the best Christmas markets and handicrafts around.  Stay in buildings built in medieval times, but updated to refined modern taste. It’s a pre-holiday trip that can definitely be worth taking.
